Lewis’s Story

An Opportunity placement in a social value department, Rise Futures supported a care experience young person Lewis* Childhood had been short for Lewis. He grew up in a happy single parent home, but soon after his tenth birthday it all changed.

Lewis's mum began a relationship with a violent man who introduced her to heroin which now takes a hold of her life. The abuse was aimed at the mum, but soon after he targeted Tony too.

‘he’s in prison now, he tried to kill my mum’

Lewis was taken into Care, and during these turbulent years school became a challenge. He was expelled from 2 schools by the age of 14 and ended up in an alternate provision where he studied his GCSE’s. Lewis was at college studying Health & Social Care, but virtual learning and the constant fear of coronavirus meant he dropped out before he finished his exams.

His Opportunity placement was to lead part of a social value project for the business. Lewis was involved in the research and then creation of the project which involved schools from the town coming together for the day and competing artistically for the prize of their work being painted onto the hoarding going around the site by professional artists. This research project led to the development of skills and qualities for Lewis, who defines this experience as a turning point in his life.
